A "change coach" was in town this week, giving a pep talk to players who are battling the game of life.
Tracy Slotin from the Executive Sandbox stopped in to the Port Coquitlam Area Women's Centre on Thursday, to talk a group of women about the importance of communication.
In discussing how people relate to one another - and the differences between mixed-gender interaction - Slotin described to the 15 women in the group about the filters people use when a person listens to what someone is saying, as well as in interpreting the reactions of people who are listening to those who are speaking.
"We listen to things through filters, and it's important to recognize what our filters are as one preventative technique," she said.
Using her own life as an example, Slotin illustrated how the abusive situation she experienced growing up shaped her way of interpreting the outside world today - and noted how important it is to recognize and understand why we react the way we do.
Slotin also addressed what she called the "disease to please" among women - the desire, and sometimes obligation, to put the needs of children, spouses, work, family and community before their own.
To illustrate her point, she handed out colourful coil notebooks and each participant chose between red, orange, yellow, green or blue. Once everyone had a notebook, Slotin asked the group whether they were completely satisfied with the colour of their notebook. If they weren't, participants were encouraged to request the colour they liked most - and were then provided the shade of their choice.
"You can get what you want in life, but you have to ask, and I'm going to give you a model of how to communicate to get what you want," she said.
The two-hour session covered a range of topics, such as how to frame requests to ensure success, as well as the importance of actively pursuing personal goals and dreams.
Shannon Brown, the centre's interim drop-in program co-ordinator, said the women's centre is hoping to bring Slotin back in the summer for more "coaching."
"I think we've all taken away something from this," she said.
